Implementation of a test/broadcast platform for 360° immersive video

From the start of my last year of Engineering school to January 2025, I'm working on a new project with a teams of 4 audiovisual students. Each students have a industrially group based projects in this period and it is designed to prepare students for a career as an engineer working in a project team. The subject of my group is the implementation of a test/broadcast platform for 360° immersive video formats

The work to be carried out in this project is as follows: we will start with a bibliographical study of the various acquisition tools and immersive headsets available, as well as an introduction to the various editing software packages (e.g., for stitching the various shots). The aim of this project is, at the very least, to set up a complete functional acquisition and processing chain linked to immersive formats, and ideally to study the performance of this chain when the acquired content contains coding/transmission artifacts.

in a second phase, if we have the time, we will build up a 360° video database with varied content of varying spatio-temporal complexity, potentially stressful for existing coding tools, which can be made available to the scientific community for use in their tests.

today, we've just started the project. We've started putting together solid documentation to produce our first deliverable, which is a summary document taking into account :

  • An overview of the different stages in the broadcast chain
  • An overview of existing solutions (encoding, 2D mapping, camera, platform, etc.)
  • Study of the various metrics available specifically for 360° video
  • awareness of limitations at all stages of the broadcast chain
